100 years after they have started using genetic engineering, society is very different from what humankind used to know.
The ruling class that is the top 1.0% of the total world population technically control the world. They create the law. They are on top of the law. They are the law.
On top of that 1.0% is the top 0.1%. That 0.1% is the richest and the most powerful of them all. They are practically untouchable as they are immune to the law.
The top 0.1% consists of 10 families spread around the world. Those families are the Mitchell Grey family of the United States, Simon Schneider family of Germany, Spencer Felton family of the United Kingdom, Takuya Ikuta family of Japan, Kim Han Sol family of South Korea, Satya Wirya family of Indonesia, Yuqi Lim family of China, Michael Leung family of Hong Kong, Nicolette Cruz family of Australia, and finally Rishi Malhotra family of India.
These 10 families define the United Nations. In fact, the United Nations is now referred to as the Family Unions.
The news of the 80th Family Unions summit is now being broadcasted live on the gigantic screen in the middle of Shibuya, Tokyo. People stop whatever they are doing and look up to the screen to witness the breaking news that is currently shown.
"What kind of rule do you think they will implement this year?" asked a girl to her friend who is standing motionless next to hear, head looking up to the screen and eyes regularly blinking emotionlessly.
The girl shakes her head.
"Come on! There is no point standing here! Nothing will impact us. At least not anytime soon," she said as she grabs her friend's arm, dragging her across the infamous Shibuya crossing.
"We should go home and watch it from home," she continues.
The other girl nods obediently.
"Sayaka, will you say something?"
Unfortunately, the girl named Sayaka is still in her own mind, busy with her own thoughts to recognize what her friend has been saying for the past ten minutes.
"Sa-ya-ka!" she calls her friend one more time while waving her free hand in front of Sayaka's face.
"Ah! Yukari, what's wrong?" Sayaka finally snaps out of it.
Yukari sighs. She fights through the crowd of people while dragging her best friend. The two girls manage to get out of the crowd after approximately fifteen minutes.
They walk in silence in a dark alley through a quiet and dirty neighbourhood. At the end of the road, there is an old house with dimmed lightbulb shining its porch.
"Grandma, we are home," shouted Yukari.
"Welcome home!" Yukari's grandma answers from inside the house.
Yukari opens the sliding door. It can only open enough for one person to walk through because there is something stuck on its rail. Yet nobody has been bothered to fix it. It has been years that Yukari has gotten used to this broken door.
"Grandma, Sayaka is here too!"
"Ah, Sayaka-chan! Welcome! Would you girls want some tea?" asked Grandma.
"Grandma Kurosawa, how are you doing?" Sayaka bows to greet Yukari's grandma.
"I am doing well, my dear. That is very sweet of you," she said.
"Yukari will be living with us from today onwards, Grandma," said Sayaka.
"She is?" Grandma looks a bit confused.
But she quickly smiles to calm the two girls. She knows that the girls already have enough to worry about to be bothered with her worries.
"Come, sit down!" Grandma said again.
The three women move to the cramped sitting room where they crowded at the old tatami.
"Have some tea!" Grandma poured a diluted green tea into cups. All three are chipped.
"Thank you." Sayaka sips the hot tea and lets the warmth calms her down.
She takes a deep breath and starts to piece her thoughts back together.
